Botox Q & A

What is Botox?

Botox is a purified form of the botulinum toxin that’s injected to eliminate facial wrinkles. When Dr. Hopkins injects Botox into a targeted muscle, the medication blocks the nerve signals that make the muscle contract. As a result, the muscle relaxes, which significantly diminishes or eliminates the wrinkles associated with that muscle.

What types of wrinkles are treated with Botox?

Your face develops two types of wrinkles over the years. Static wrinkles are caused by age-related changes such as thinning skin, dehydration, loss of collagen, and sun damage.

The second type, called dynamic wrinkles, are different because they form over years of using the same muscles to make certain facial expressions. These repeated muscle movements cause some of the deepest and most noticeable wrinkles on your face.

Since Botox targets muscles, it significantly diminishes or eliminates these moderate to severe dynamic wrinkles:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Frown lines
  • Forehead furrows
  • Bunny lines on your upper nose

Following a Botox treatment, you lose the wrinkles, but you still retain your natural facial expression.

What should I expect during and after my Botox treatment?

Prior to your treatment, Dr. Hopkins explains the procedure and talks with you about whether you might want a topical anesthetic. Your session takes about 10 minutes, depending on the number of wrinkles being treated.

Afterward, the injected areas may be slightly red and swollen, but these side effects don’t last long. In the meantime, you can cover the redness with makeup. You don’t need to plan for downtime, but you should avoid strenuous activities for several hours following your procedure.

When will I see results after a Botox treatment?

It only takes a short time for Botox to work, so you’ll see the results in 24-48 hours. You can expect to have your new youthful appearance for up to four months.* Botox gradually wears off, but you can get another treatment at the end of four months to maintain the results. Many patients discover that the effect lasts longer with repeated Botox sessions.

Botox has been FDA-approved for treating facial wrinkles for nearly two decades. During that time, it has built a reputation for safety and consistent success in rejuvenating your appearance. To schedule an appointment, call Hopkins MD or use the online booking feature.
